BgInfo v4.28 BgInfo v4.28 How many times have you walked up to a system in your office and needed to click through several diagnostic windows to remind yourself of important aspects of its configuration, such as its name, IP address, or operating system version? If you manage multiple computers you probably need BGInfo. It automatically displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktop's background, such as the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more. You can edit any field as well as the font and background colors, and can place it in your startup folder so that it runs every boot, or even configure it to display as the background for the logon screen. Because BGInfo simply writes a new desktop bitmap and exits, you don't have to worry about it consuming system resources or interfering with other applications. Installation and Use By placing BGInfo in your Startup folder, you can ensure that the system information being displayed is up to date each time you boot. Once you've settled on the information to be displayed, use the command-line option /timer:0 to update the display without showing the dialog box. You can also use the Windows Scheduler to run BGInfo on a regular basis to ensure long-running systems are kept up to date. If you create a BGInfo configuration file (using the File|Save Settings menu item) you can automatically import and use those settings on other systems by adding the /I<path> or /iq<path> command line option. However, it is also known for its annoying popup ads. But because this is such a good antivirus, these ads were usually tolerated by their users. However, in late 2014, a new bug made these ads even more unbearable : the CPU usage often reached 100% after an ad was displayed! And closing the Avira ad window was not enough. The only way to stop this high CPU usage was to manually kill the problematic ad processes or reboot the computer. If you didn't, your CPU could overheat to the point to affect your computer's longevity. This was obviously a very serious bug! So I decided to write this small utility to monitor and kill all unwanted Avira ads. This way, I solved this bug and made sure my CPU would not overheat because of Avira ads. Controls Windows automatic updating/upgrading system by targeting it to a specific major version and feature update release. By default, the current release will be used. So if you “Take Control” with the major version and feature release shown in the boxes in the lower left, Windows will remain right where it is – only installing monthly security updates – until you “Release control”. If you wish to move to a future release, say from Windows 10 21H1 to Windows 10 21H2, you can first “Release Control” to allow those two fields to be edited. Then change the “21H1” to “21H2” and press “Take Control”. Windows Update will now be targeted at the 21H2 feature release and will offer it for installation once it's available. And if you do nothing else, your system will remain there until you again deliberately release control. Note that InControl will hold your Windows right where it is, even after the current version and feature release has gone out of support. You will see a complaint about the current version of Windows requiring an update. But your system will not be updated while you are InControl. If you have been playing with InControl and want to restore its Version and Release fields to their natural (current) default values, delete those fields' contents while the system is not under control, then click “Take Control” and they will be set to the system's current version and feature release. On large corporate systems, the IT guys would normally remotely control this message. On individual systems, say where you want to remind the kids at home or employees in a small business, you can also do this by manually editing the System Registry. However, that's not only a pain, but even if you are a System Registry editing pro, simple editing of the registry keys results in a message with no line formatting, and to get the message to be line formatted with carriage returns requires editing the registry entry at the binary level. Since I manage some Windows machines used for computer simulations by graduate students, as well as have a home workstation dedicated for work related use, I wrote a small editor to allow me to change this message, with line formatting, quickly and simple without having to deal with the Group Policy editor nor with manually binary editing the System Registry.
